This book's primary enterprise is to illuminate parallels between several dozen Biblical stories and the myths of other ancient societies with whom the ancient Hebrews had contact. But for someone who has already realized the f An excellent collection of scholarly conclusions regarding the Biblical stories, their parallels with other myths, and other archaeological evidence. On the bright side, Greenberg's Myths of the Bible was not such a poor first step that I was turned off from the endeavor. This is not a book that attempts to debunk the Bible, but rather treats the stories sympathically. Greenberg turns the story of Jacob wrestling God into a copy of Horus and Set, personified day and night, fighting each other. For example, the plagues of Egypt and crossing of the Reed sea are in a lately viewed program. The author has examined the biblical stories that we are all more or less familiar with and located earlier versions of those same stories in other cultures, particularly that of ancient Egypt.

Greenberg draws interesting parallels, but fails to substantiate them. These are the enduring challenges of hermeneutics. Is this a compelling argument?

It is not for people who are literalists. Do you prefer to try different makes and vintages or do you have a firm favourite? Regardless, it's an interesting book, and Greenberg poses interesting theories.

Like some of the other reviewers said, this book is an excellent one for browsing, or even to use in regular discussions, as the chapters are short and brief less than a page to a few pages. Greenberg rests his burden heavily upon the ancient Egyptians, which if we don't reject the legend of Hebrew exile in Egypt as itself a myth, seems a reasonable avenue for research. Holman decided to call it quits.
